The Dallas Police Department is currently facing a critical challenge in its personnel numbers. Despite hiring 200 new officers, the department has experienced a net loss of 38 officers, with 238 leaving the force. To address this shortfall and bolster the safety of our city, it is essential that we increase the police department's budget, which will enable us to recruit and retain at least 400 more officers. Other regions, such as Florida and Fort Worth, have successfully attracted new talent.
Valley View is a mess. Candy's opponent has made it worse by being at war with the developer. And after a fire on February 14, she failed to conduct structural safety checks and accelerate the tear-down. There was a second fire on March 18, and two Dallas firefighters were injured. The tear down started on February 19, having been scheduled on that date for 10 months. Candy's opponent is saying SHE is responsible for the tear down. Ironically, in her 2021 campaign, Jaynie Schultz said she would hold the Beck’s “feet to the fire” and get Valley View torn down.
Short-term rentals refer to the practice of renting out homes, apartments, or rooms for brief periods. These rentals have gained popularity with the rise of online platforms like Airbnb, VRBO, and HomeAway, which facilitate transactions between property owners and travelers. Short-term rentals have introduced new challenges for neighborhoods.
Dallas has experienced a surge in short-term rentals, with negative consequences for the city and its residents. The proliferation of short-term rentals can contribute to a decrease in affordable housing options for locals, as property owners are incentivized to rent their properties to tourists for higher profits. Moreover, short-term rentals have been linked to an increase in noise, disturbances and crime in peaceful residential neighborhoods.
Candy recognizes the importance of addressing short-term rentals. Implementing strict regulations or even eliminating short-term rentals in Dallas will protect the city's long-term interests. By prioritizing the needs of residents and ensuring the availability of affordable housing, Candy aims to create a more sustainable and harmonious living environment for all.
The Dallas Permitting Department has faced numerous challenges, including bureaucratic inefficiencies, cumbersome processes, and lengthy delays in issuing permits for construction and renovation projects. These issues have not only hindered the growth and development of the city but also frustrated business owners, residents, and developers alike. As part of her campaign for Dallas City Council, Candy Evans is committed to addressing these problems and implementing much-needed reforms.
We need centralized services with a strong focus on mental health care, and no more back and forth of encampment move-out.
High property taxes are the real culprit of housing unaffordability, a reduction is needed with our budget surplus. We are watching Austin closely on this, too.
